I'm giving away an advanced reader copy of Tonight the Streets are Ours by Leila Sales.

I accidentally picked up two copies while at BEA - one at Leila Sales' signing and another at a drop - and want to share the wealth. This amazing novel doesn't come out until September, but it sounds like it'll be an awesome summer read.

Interested? Well go on and watch the video below.
Hello fellow book readers!!

I realized that it's been almost a year since I've updated here - and for that I'm sorry. However, between moving, building a house, and starting my job at a new location the year just kind of faded away. I ALSO started doing all this bloggish stuff almost strictly on YouTube.

There needs to be an option to just automatically cross-reference all the things...

All my reviews and other book awesomeness videos have been posting over there every Tuesday and Friday(ish) since the new year and they were semi-regular before that when I was able.

I WAS without internet all summer/fall, so there's a huge gap between the move into the new house and the time that Internet was finally installed. Let's just say it was one day more and I would have been rocking in the corner from the withdrawal.

So, the whole point of this post - have you checked out my Official YouTube page? If not, come find me as MsLadyCritic. For some reason, someone who doesn't even do the Tube took the name TheLadyCritic... so I had to improvise.

Stay tuned there for the Month of May where I'm planning on having a video EVERY DAY!! Subsequently, this is going to be titled Every Day in May... for obvious reasons. I already have most of the month planned out and some of the videos filmed already!

Also, let me know if you're planning on going to Book Expo America this year! I finally got the go-ahead from work and have my BloggerCon and BEA pass and my plane ticket booked! I'm really excited to be going again this year and I can't wait to see all the bookish friends I don't see on the regular!!!!!-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-25995850203932804412014-04-04T13:36:00.002-04:002014-04-04T13:37:40.730-04:00Sexy Metal Band - The Creation of a Sex GodThis review is a little our of my norm since it's for a hardcore adult romance. I would warn that this borders on erotica - but there's more plot than any erotica book I've ever tried to read. But there is LOTS of sex. Sex, sex, sex.

That being said, it was the book that really for me out of my reading funk a while ago. It has engaging characters and a great plot. When I read it, I wasn't aware that it was the second in a series, and as soon as I was done I promptly went and secured the other four books so that I could binge on them ASAP.

Of course, by now you're probably wondering what book I'm talking about. So let's lay down the details and move on to my video review!

I am surprised that I posted FOUR book hauls in March - having only bought a few books myself. I'm sad to say that I didn't even include my Amazon book purchases for Kindle - those will have to be combined in a mega haul and include a few months worth of Kindle books and other ebooks obtained in that period of time.

Until then, here are the videos to my book hauls from last month!

This is going to be a little different for today's review - mostly because it's for:

1. Amazon books
2. which were previously published on Fictionpress where I first read them
3. the second and third in a series since I consider the first to be more of a prequel and these two are one and a sequel with the same characters
4. they're self-pubbed from an indie author

I have started reviewing the amazing Amazon books that I've read in order to get them out there more in the world. This includes the freebies and the paid ones, so be warned! And, of course, most of this is being done on my YouTube channel before being posted here - which is why there's a delay between post dates.

But I'm getting away from today's review. Here it is!

So in short, while both books need some TLC from someone who isn't attached to them (i.e. a professional editor), they have an amazing story to tell and characters to love.

You're immediately sucked into the story and the romance between the main characters. However, what's refreshing about this is the fact that you're not dealing with any form or insta-love like you seen in so many comparable novels in the YA and NA genre.

While you have to pay a few dollars for each book on Amazon (sorry, no free first book here), it's well worth the money if you are interested in seeing where the story goes. If anything it's a great few hours in someone else's drama - which really does suck you in.
Personally, I can't wait to actually see how the two relate. From the commercials I can already see that they've changed quite a bit. I'm also hoping that it will give me a few answers that the book left open. Of course, there is also a sequel to this duology (it that even a word?!) coming out this September. I'm hoping for an ARC at BEA in a few months. ;)

Stay tuned below for my video review of the book! There was so much more that I wanted to discuss in the video - but I also wanted to keep it short.
The 100

Written by: Kass Morgan

Released: September 3rd 2013 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary: In the future, humans live in city-like spaceships orbiting far above Earth's toxic atmosphere. No one knows when, or even if, the long-abandoned planet will be habitable again. But faced with dwindling resources and a growing populace, government leaders know they must reclaim their homeland... before it's too late.

Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents are being sent on a high-stakes mission to recolonize Earth. After a brutal crash landing, the teens arrive on a savagely beautiful planet they've only seen from space. Confronting the dangers of this rugged new world, they struggle to form a tentative community. But they're haunted by their past and uncertain about the future. To survive, they must learn to trust - and even love - again.

So, unless you didn't watch the video (shame on you) you saw that I did enjoy the book.

I loved how the characters stories were all laced together in one way or another - not that this should be a surprise since they live on a relatively small space ship - and how there were flashbacks mixed in with the present day so that you could understand they "why" better.

Since this was made into a CW show, or because of it, it really reads like a prime time drama on the station. While I personally enjoyed this aspect, I can see where others wouldn't find it the same way. There was a sense of predictability about the whole book, but when there were twists you expected them, but had no idea what they would be.

While it took me a few seconds each chapter to get into the different character perspective, I did enjoy the four main characters and seeing the events from their eyes. I loved how each of them were able to bring something different to the story and how they differed vastly.

I can't wait for the second book. It needs to come faster.-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-13121045443563070882014-03-13T02:06:00.001-04:002014-03-13T02:06:04.895-04:00Ch-ch-ch-ch-CHANGES!!!Hello all! I was super bored tonight and decided that it would result in my fooling around with my blog design. I wanted something clean and fresh for this new year.

(And yes I'm aware it's mid-March - maybe this stems from the never ending winter we're all living with)

The only good thing that's come from this late dumping of snowpocalypse is the fact that I'm ahead in my Goodreads challenge!! I might even surpass my goal this year if I keep up this pace!

On a side note, who else is just waiting for the end of May to get here so we can go to BEA? It can't be just me. Although if there's still snow then, I might not be the easiest person to be around. Heads will roll.

Stay tuned for more updates soon! I've been sick/tired/working/playing and haven't had the time to do much more than check my email on my computer lately. But I have some videos and posts that should pop up soon!!

Happy reading ladies and gents!-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-33628994106896588302014-03-04T03:43:00.001-05:002014-03-04T03:43:47.893-05:00Top Ten Tuesday - Popular Author I've Never Read
The Extra Review!

The short stories in this collection are from some of the best YA writers out there (right now) and are nothing short of amazingly imaginative. While I was able to guess most of the fairy tale influences for each, there were one or two where I had no clue what tale they drew from. I especially loved the story about The Chad (I kept picturing Tom Green from Charlie's Angels) and the Bluebeard rendition. I'm definitely going to keep my eyes out for this one when it's released later this month.

I received my copy of Grim from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She’d left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

An Extra Review!!!!

So, this book interested me mainly because of the whole virginity angle; I find it fascinating that the main character is almost a university graduate and still has her virginity in tact. Today, kids are losing their virginity at such younger and younger ages and it can be quite alarming - especially with news reports of 14 year old girls and younger becoming pregnant from it. But that’s a whole other topic.

I loved the fact that Bliss, the main character, was still a virgin by choice. No religious or old fashioned beliefs here folks. I also found it interesting that she really wanted to lose it ASAP — but in the right way. I feel like, because of this fact, this book will be able to speak to a lot of girls (and guys) who are interested in the New Adult genre. Or just interested in this book itself.

Pair a good plot with great characters and this was a greatly enjoyable read, even though I found a hard time getting into it. But I blame that fact mostly on having to read a PDF on my computer since my personal paperback copy is in storage with most of my life*.

*Moving stinks. Having to wait to move into your new house stinks even more. To ease this boredom, I started to listen to audiobooks. I was killing two birds with one stone; I started to ease out of my book reading slump, and I made my drives interesting.

One of the first books was the first in the Kane Chronicles, and since it was so amazing, I continued with the second when I got my hands on an audiobook copy.
Basically, this series is wonderful. Ok, I'll admit that I didn't love it like I love the Percy Jackson series, but still. This is aimed at a slightly younger audience - but is still awesome for all ages. I did, when the first book was released, try to read it and it fell a little flat. But this is why I love the audiobooks so much. The voice actors really make the characters and the story come alive, and thus made me enjoy the book immensely.

Last year I reviewed the first Vampire Academy book by Richelle Mead and posted the video on YouTube (click the link here to see it), and it took me months to fish reading the series - admittedly reading the last four books within a few weeks after needing to know what happens next.

My love or the series is why I decided to make a video just about the series. Well, that and because I don't have my copies of the books to make said individual review videos*.

So here is my series review for Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead just in time for the Vampire Academy movie release this Friday!! I am so excited for the movie and even more excited for the Bloodlines series and see more of my favourite characters.

So, I'm not going to lie - I'm horrible at updating this site. Feel free to agree with me. However, to be fair to myself, I haven't been DOING anything with it to update... Until now!

Just in case you're late to the party (I'm always late... it happens), I made a new YouTube channel JUST FOR THE BOOKS!!! And its one that makes more sense for the blog, and the twitter, and the instagram....

This new channel is MsLadyCritic. <----This is the link to click...
Sometimes I forget how to spell it. In fact, there's a video on there where I do - or there's one that I have yet to edit where it happens. Regardless, it happened.

Now, the reason for this post.

I suck at updating.

There, I said it. And that being said, I'm going to try REALLY hard to update here more frequently, but I'll be honest - the YouTube will probably be done more often. I think it's because I like the challenge of making and editing coherent videos where I don't quite look like the spaz that I am. And I love a challenge. It keeps me young.

So that's where you'll find me on the semi-regular. I'm trying, at least, to make more videos and not just reviews and book hauls*.

*I'm trying to not buy books until after BEA. We'll see how that goes.
I'll admit, being as away from the book nation that I have been lately, I missed a lot of the hype. By missed, I really mean chose to ignore... but you know what I mean. When the book was first released I did scour every book store I could find to obtain a copy with a yeti in it, but my mission failed and I just didn't buy a copy. I should have just got the copy at Shoppers with the purple autograph. Hindsight, what can I say.

Regardless, I was excited to see that another young adult book was being made into a movie. I love that even the really poorly done ones are introducing so many more people to reading the books that they're based on - which makes them act like a gateway drug and leads these people down the dark road of reading YA and having ALL THE FEELS.

With the release of Vampire Academy next week, Divergent soon, and other amazing movies to come, this trailer just bumped TFiOS up on my 'must watch' list. Because of that, I'm sharing the trailer with you all too. Of course I realize that you probably have already watched this trailer on YouTube, but still. Here it is!!!
;)

But seriously, I'm here to let you all know that I have a new YouTube account for blogging. You can find me as MsLadyCritic and I've even posted several reviews! I've been trying to post one a week - but to be honest I've been swamped and haven't always accomplished my goal. But I'm trying!

I've also added a new member to my family! I have a new puppy named Lucy. Sophie loves her. Somehow I don't have photos of Lucy on my computer yet but I was able to forage some from my e-mails!

So that's what's been going on with me. I'll try to update this blog with the new videos as well but I'm not promising anything. To be honest, my work schedule is annoyingly heinous and they've got me on an alternation of mornings and midnights. It's making regular sleep patterns very hard to obtain.

Until next time!!!-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-49150738760429515952012-08-08T22:18:00.000-04:002012-08-08T22:18:00.228-04:00Wishlist Wednesday - Number Seventy-Eight

Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

posting regularly again! So, since it’s Wednesday, I’m going to share one of
the latest books that I’ve set my eye on.

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">A sweeping Gothic thriller
based on the spine-chilling "Bluebeard" fairytale.

17-year-old Sophia Petheram has been sheltered by her doting family all her
life, until the day her father dies. It's 1855, and with no money and few
options, she goes to live with her guardian, the mysterious Bernard de Cressac,
at the astonishingly lavish Wyndriven Abbey in Mississippi.

Sophie has always longed for a comfortable life, and she finds herself both
attracted to and shocked by the charm and easy manners of her overgenerous
guardian. But as she begins to piece together the mystery of his past, it's as
if thread by thread, a silken net is woven around her. And when she begins
glimpsing the ghosts of his former wives (all with hair as red as her own) in
the forgotten corners and dark hallways of the Abbey, Sophie knows she's in de
Cressac's trap.

With enchanting romance, chilling suspense, and dashes of the supernatural,
Strands of Bronze and Gold is a compulsively-readable debut

Yeah, I was all in as soon as I read “fairytale” and the
fact that it’s Bluebeard – a fairy tale that I can’t recall a retelling of –
makes me super excited. Sadly, this one will make me wait until March 12 of
next year. But even if it wasn’t a fairytale retelling (an automatic addition
onto my reading list) the cover alone would make me want to read it!

And now, for an overdose of cuteness, I bring you a photo of
Sophie and her Cone of Shame! Poor Sophie just came home from the vet and she’s
not very happy.

Can I just say that I've been super busy? Yeah, so not an excuse. Anyway, If you're interested in viewing MORE of my book hauls from NYC and BEA, visit my YouTube here. It's where I have the ARCs video and whatnot.

Now, here's my video for books! Duh, obviously, from the post title. hahha. I'm going to blame this post on it being late and me watching old episodes of Toddler's and Tiaras on YouTube... There's an episode with pets in the pageant. One kid has a pet turkey.

Until next time (which should be much sooner than recent weeks has dictated)!!!

Stay tuned for part two which will be books from The Strand. Yes, they warranted their own separate video. I went a little crazy... but only a little. ;)

Thanks for watching!
-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-85208518570713572062012-06-09T14:25:00.000-04:002012-06-09T14:25:06.046-04:00NYC 2012 - Days Before BEA

Ok, so I’m going to attempt to put my goldfish-like memory
to the test and relay everything from the past week. Last year I was so on top
of things and wrote a post every night but this year... yeah, not so much. Oh
well, here goes – The beginning!

So Saturday morning started off early and getting up to get
to the airport and, before that, taking poor Sophie over to the neighbours to
puppysit for the week. Is it weird that I so just want to get home so that I
can watch Pretty Little Liars season two (which I just bought) and snuggle with
her?

Anyway, once we – my mother and her bf stowed away on the
trip with me – were at the airport it was a lot of sitting and waiting. Of
course, during our time there I was picked on by security. Oh yes, I was privy
to the pat-down (I’ve heard rumours that they can see your underoos in that
x-ray machine) and set off the security alarms because I was a dumb-ass and forgot
to take off my watch and bracelet. Experienced traveller I apparently am not.

So, after all that and a quick up-down flight from Ottawa to
NYC, I was greeted in the city by Jake Gyllenhaal. Ok, that’s a bit of a lie,
but I did see him at LaGuardia while making my way out. He was going through
security. I did a triple-take at the hotness before I was sure it was him. I
wish now that I hadn’t tried to play it cool and just went up and took a
picture. But, alas, I tried to be all unaffected while furiously whispering to
my mother who that hot guy in the grey t-shirt was. She was unaffected.

After that was a relatively uneventful taxi ride and
check-in at the hotel. I was just so happy to be in the city that I dropped
everything and demanded food and shopping. TGIFridays it was and we went to buy
shitteous pay-as-you-go cell phones at Kmart.

Side note here for fellow Canadians – don’t try and “save
money” by buying one of these things. Never in my life have I had more problems
with a phone. The entire week I have just been wishing for my purple blackberry
and a way of communicating with people that wasn’t twitter or facebook. I
effing HATE facebook. Luckily I went out and bought a new iPod touch to replace
my seriously dated two gig nano the next day so wifi was at my touch whenever
available!

But I’m getting off track.

So Sunday was my attempt to get to the circus in Queens
where first I forgot out tickets (thankfully to realize as soon as we were in
our first cab and still at the hotel) and then there was some street party
thing going on so our amazing cabbie took us the long way around – and had a
GPS that must have been a cousin to my phone because it wasn’t working either.
Thankfully both he and I had common sense and a good sense of direction so we
made it to the park where the circus was being held without a problem.

Let me tell you, if you’re ever able to see the Big Apple
Circus make sure that you do! I know I’ve been to a circus before but I don’t
remember it and this one was so amazingly good! I will be going back if I ever
can. Also, if I ever figure out how to get the photos off my phone I’ll post
them.

After the Circus and asking the locals where we could get a
bus/subway back to Manhattan (and then walking in the rain to said bus stop) we
met with my cousins for dinner. And we went to the Lego store at Rockefeller
Center. I don’t remember where we went for dinner, but it was around there and was
famous for their burgers. I had boneless chicken wings...

So to sum up, Sunday consisted of a lot of walking and fun
times. But the real fun started Monday!

Also, on another side note - it's effing hard to type on a train! And I'll add photos later to go with the post.
-khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05300379143519006957noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9164516325994410111.post-36087438698909656872012-06-01T07:00:00.000-04:002012-06-01T07:00:05.791-04:00This Is Why I Love YouYay! You’re here for my stop in the 30 Days of Daemon BlogTour! Today’s topic is the many reasons whyI love Daemon!

Ok, so there are many reasons why I love Daemon – first and
foremost being because he’s beyond super sexy. Seriously, seriously, he brings
the sexy times. It’s enough to give a girl a hot flash! However, there are many
other reasons why I love Daemon.

First off, he’s a total ass. But he’s such a loveable ass
that it makes it all ok. I know that this makes me sound a little insipid but
give me a minute. See, he’s an ass in order to firm a barrier between him and
all humans. After all, they say that sarcasm and being a jerk is the best
defense and Daemon does that in spades. But
as you get to know his character you find out just how amazing he is!

Next, he tries to always do the best thing for his family
and his people – even when it means not giving himself what he really wants. He’s
rather selfless that way and you have to give the guy a hand for having that
kind of power over his libido.

He’s infuriating! I don’t think that I’ve read a male
character who made me as angry as Daemon does! You think he’s about to do one thing and then
he turns around and does the complete opposite!

And finally, he’s one BAMF!!! Seriously, that right there is
almost reason enough to love him. He’s the Neville Longbottom of the alien
world.

So those are the reasons that I love Daemon Black. I have to
say that I am so excited for the Onyx release (I have my copy pre-ordered along
with a copy of Shadows) just so that I can own more of Daemon.

If you haven’t checked out this series yet – go now! You can
start by reading my review of book one, Obsidian, right here. Trust me, this is
one series that you won’t regret reading. And, if you’re a book blogger, you’ll
especially love the inner blogger speak!
